This afternoon I tackled the shrubbery by the driveway. I'm not sure what it is; some leggy leafy evergreen that looks a lot like logustrum but isn't. Every year I cut it back to make it fuller, and every year I tell myself afterwards that I should have cut it back more. So this year I was merciless. My vorpal blade went snicker-snack for the better part of an hour, with branches and leaves piling up on the sidewalk in my wake.
It looks absolutely terrible. If a hedge could have mange, this is what it would look like. But I know it's only temporary, and if not this year then the next it will finally take shape. As I get older, I am learning to take a longer view.
