I am such a bad plant mommy [Dec. 14th, 2004|10:23 pm]

It is supposed to freeze tonight and I just can't muster the enthusiasm to cover any of my plants. So I guess it's bye-bye to the impatiens for this year.

And now, typing this out, I feel guilty. It's one thing to let a plant die from neglect, but it's another thing entirely to willfully let a plant die of neglect.

But I suppose it's all the natural order of things, right? As if growing in a pot on my back porch is a natural habitat.

Good thing there isn't a PETA for plants.

If you lived where I do you would have kissed those impatiens goodbye months ago and not thought anything of it. No one around here expects a plant as fragile as impatiens to make it through the winter. We pot and plant them fully recognizing that their life is temporary.

It's the circle of life. The greenhouse, your car, your pots, the garbage.

Now, if you could *eat* the impatiens, that would be a completely different sort of angst.

You know, I probably could...no wait, that's nasturtiums.

I Was...

...a good gardener, and covered my rose bushes; however, the dianthus and bluebonnets got iced.

The bluebonnets need the freeze, though; it's part of their growing, blooming and seeding cycle. And the dianthus are annuals. I've seen them survive an Illinois winter, so I'm not worried about them not growing back next spring.

Time to grow something hardier, my friend. Oh, and I'm home this weekend(hint, hint). Hehe!

Re: I Was...

Hardier? Impatiens are the only thing I don't kill.

I would love to see you this weekend, but I'm having surgery on Friday (old ear tubes out, holes plugged, new tubes in, correct deviated septum) and probably won't be up to travelling by Sat.
